Meet Our 2008 New Members

We are pleased to welcome two new member organizations to Community Shares this year.

ACORN

ACORN

ACORN Institute provides outreach and educational materials to ensure that low-income Cincinnati families have a voice in community decisions and equal access to financial capacity-building services.  To lean more visit ACORN’s website.

Cincinnati Human Relations Commission

CHRC

HRC is an independent nonprofit agency that works with the City of Cincinnati and community members to help Cincinnati overcome prejudice and discrimination, build mutual respect and understanding, and encourage equality and fairness for all.  Specific activities coordinated by CHRC include running the Street Workers program, providing Community Relations Monitors for special events, and producing “In Focus” (a weekly public affairs cable television show stressing human rights issues).  To learn about these activities in more detail visit the CHRC website.

Health Resource Center of Cincinnati

HRCC

Since 1995 the Health Resource Center has served homeless and at-risk individuals who are in need of medical, psychiatric and/or social services whose needs are not being met by other agencies. Its services are unique in that clients pay on a sliding scale with fees beginning at $0 (for clients 200% below the federal poverty line).  Find out more about the Health Resource Center’s work at its website.

United Coalition of Animals (UCAN)

UCAN

More than 33,000 dogs and cats are euthanized in Greater Cincinnati each year. UCAN believes that spaying and neutering companion animals is a better solution to pet overpopulation. Inspired by successful programs in other cities, UCAN opened the region’s only non-profit spay/neuter clinic in April 2007.  Find out what you can do to help UCAN by visiting its website.

Power Inspires Progress (PIP)

The goal of Power Inspires Progress (PIP), a non-profit employment education program, is to increase the power and independence of people through skill development, relationship building, collaboration, and interaction with other organizations. .

PIP was founded by Sr.'s Judy Tensing and Barbara Wheeler in order to provide an on-the-job training program for those who have difficulty obtaining and/or maintaining employment. Program trainees are inner-city residents who face barriers to employment such as transportation issues, lack of or poor work history, physical or learning disabilities, a past history of incarceration and/or addiction, and limited positive employment options. As participants in the PIP program, trainees receive paid training through the organizations two principle not-for-profit businesses, Venice on Vine Pizza and Venice Catering. While receiving training participants are expected to follow rules designed to prepare them for full-time employment including reporting to work on time, respecting co-workers and customers, and refraining from substance abuse. In addition, PIP empowers trainees to further their education by providing instruction in basic life skills.

After completing training, program participants are assisted with their job search and education activities by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers so that program participants can move to full-time employment with a living wage. For more information, please visit the PIP website.
Healthcare provision, job training, environmental advocacy, civil rights protection, and education are just some of the services our organizations offer in order to tackle systemic problems facing our region.  We invite you to learn more about Community Shares' member organizations via the member profiles.  These profiles provide a short description, website and phone number for each organization and can be browsed as an alphabetical listing or by the services they provide.
